Strawberry Substrate Production Group Visit from Moldova 2019

In September 2019 we have offered our translation service for HollandDoor for a study group from Moldova who wanted to know more about strawberry production in substrate. The group was guided throughout a whole week by Jos Leeters and Geerten van der Lugt from HollandDoor.

On the first day we were warmly welcomed by Meteor Systems who gave a great introduction about the greenhouse constructions and gutter systems. After their presentation they lead to us to a strawberry farmer so we could see how their systems were used. Afterwards we headed to the south of the Netherlands to the company CLTV in Zundert, who gave a brief presentation about what they do, and their involvement in the auction Hoogstraten. Once more we visited a farmed together with CLTV before we called it a day.

On the second day, we started off with a seminar soilless strawberry culture by Delphy, here we discussed the main advantages and difference between growing outdoor and indoor hydroponically. In coherence to the seminar we headed off to Legro substrates to get a broad explanation of the different materials used from strawberry substrates and what the advantages and disadvantages are. The people from Legro also brought us to the grower Thwan van Gennip, so we could see not only strawberry production with their substrate but also raspberry and blackberry.

On the third day, we started by visiting Mertens who gave a presentation about their product portfolio and introduction to biological crop protection. Which resulted us visiting a high-tech Dutch greenhouse from Ron Kessels. Where we got a tour through his greenhouse and insights into growing strawberries hydroponically inside a high-tech Dutch greenhouse. Once the tour was ended we headed over to Aardbei extra to get to know about strawberry young plants. And how they use virgin lands to grow them. Since we had a free afternoon, we decided to give them a small culture trip to the Hague and show them the sea and taste of the Dutch Haring.

The fourth day kicked off by Delphy once more. With a seminar about harvesting, post harvesting and a broad lecture by Geerten van der Lugt about fertigation and fertilizers. In the afternoon we were welcomed by Koppert and got a tour through their museum.

On the last day we had a presentation about technological equipment such as fertilizer mixer, pumps and climate computers by Sercom. Leading us up north to the newest province of the Netherlands Flevoland to the company Flevoberry and Flevoplant. Where we got a seminar about the different races they produce and how they do it by the famous strawberry agronomist Jan Robben. Ending the week with the last visit to the production location for AGRIROS fertilizers.
